With the demise of the German cruisers on the colonial stations, the Entente forces had next to no enemies left on the open ocean. However, the performance of the cruisers had been so convincing that the German Navy decided to continue harassing enemy merchant ships, by means of converted cargo ships that carried guns, torpedoes and soldiers to capture or sink any merchant ship they encountered.
SMS Möwe , the former freighter Pungo, had been built at the J.C. Tecklenburg shipyard in Geestemünde and had already been taken over as auxiliary ship H.D.10 for the German Navy in November 1915. She was converted to an auxiliary cruiser in December 1915 and was to be one of the most successful ships of its kind.
